Charles was called to the bar in 2004 and transferred across to become a solicitor in 2007. Charles’ legal career combines both in-house and private practice with a broad range of commercial experience across multiple industries and jurisdictions. Charles specialises in all aspects of data privacy governance since 2015, including GDPR and marketing regulations as this area is continuing to grow and remains a risk activity for clients.

Charles is able to support on all aspects of data privacy governance as one off advice (e.g. a complex regulatory issue), act as a DPO or support any aspects of data privacy compliance. Charles’ commercial approach enables him to support clients pragmatically and to assist them to understand where the risks are in a particular activity and how to manage this effectively. Advice includes standard processes (e.g. DPIA, LIA, Rights and ROPA) but also complex areas such as marketing regulations (PECR), international transfers and data management in complex projects, or new areas such as AI.

my work
Supporting a complex project involving the management of health insurance and clinical delivery sectors to collaborate as part of a group company. This involved supporting the design of complex data privacy governance but also coordinating this with clinical governance principles such as patient confidentiality.
Act as DPO during GDPR for 6 organisations simultaneously to implement GDPR and developing and implementing a BAU strategy.
Wider expertise includes, dealing with complex/contentious DSARs, regulator engagement, complex marketing issues, security and contentious data breaches. Develop data privacy policies and procedures and wider BAU activities.
Interest
about me
Charles enjoys spending time with his family and outdoor activities, particularly traveling abroad, discovering new cultures and hiking. Charles is also an experienced kitesurfer/hydrofoiler being based in the south coast and support his local surf life saving club.
